What is Guru about?
May 3, 2006
There are conflicting reports about the theme of Mani Ratnam's latest Guru. On one hand, it is said to be a period drama set during the 1857 revolt (please….not another Mangal Pandey!!!)…and last heard was that it was based on the life and times of Dhirubhai Ambani.
In fact when the film was initially announced, it was supposed to be a romantic comedy!!! The cast is supposed to have signed a strict confidentiality contract. In any case, it should be interesting to see what this one finally turns out to be.
On the flip side, Mani's former direct Hindi ventures Dil Se and Yuva have been unsuccessful at the box office. When I first saw Yuva, I was quite impressed (though was very pissed at Ajay Devgan's casting)…but later when I caught the Telugu version, the Hindi version appeared to be a complete letdown. I guess the difference in comfort level in making a Tamil film and a Hindi film clearly showed in this case. After Guru, Mani is teaming up with Aamir Khan for his next. Hmm…is he following RGV's footsteps by running away to Bollywood permanently??? waits to be seen
