Check out this real bad quality trailor of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdZNzjNIa7g

So, Mr. Candy Floss is finally trying something different :) After watching the trailer one thing you'll figure out is that Amitabh Bachchan will die in the film. BTW, did you notice that death scenes have a major impact on the plot in Karan's movies.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – Rani Mukherji
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – Kajol's Father
Kal Ho Na Ho – Shahrukh Khan
Kaal – everyone including audience

I’ve written about good films and bad films earlier….now it’s about the most disgusting films in mainstream cinema (Hindi/Telugu) (which I happened to see unfortunately). I use the word mainstream to exclude all those prominent B & C grade movies. For me, some of the movies are all the more disgusting because I had seen them with my parents.

Though I don’t want to rate them in any particular order, this particular one rightly deserves to be on the top of the list. It’s of course Chiranjeevi’s Alluda Majaaka. I really have no words for this film. I saw this one with my parents and grandparents which makes this all the more memorable….whatever made Chiranjeevi sign this movie!

Next one is Rakesh Roshan’s Koyla featuring Shahrukh Khan. Khan probably would have signed this film after listening to only his role in it….somebody should have shown him the script of Amrish Puri and the “comedy” track revolving around him.

Now I wouldn’t want to name any particular movie, but anything featuring Balakrishna would always qualify as disgusting in my view.

Of course, Dharmesh Darshan isn’t far behind with his magnum opus Mela. Maybe Mr. Perfectionist Khan wanted to add a perfect disaster like Mela to his resume.

Then, who can forget David Dhawan’s Raja Babu….school teachers lifting up their sarees and dancing to A Aa Eee…is a memorable movie moment you’ll never forget :)

One more entry for David Dhawan with Andaz. Two songs were almost banned for their objectionable lyrics and choreography….one goes Khada Hai Khada Hai, Kabse tere liye Khada hai and the other one goes Main Maalgaadi tu Dhakka Laga :)

enough of disgusting stuff for now…will try to come up with something pleasant in my next post

Pawan Kalyan's much hyped Bangaaram opened to really bad reviews. If the film flops as predicted, it would be the 4th one in a row for Pawan. Well, Pawan is supposed to be the most "creative" person in Tollywood…In fact he has a group called "Pawan Kalyan creative works" which is credited in his movies. I don't know what was so creative about Gudumba Shankar, Balu and Bangaaram. Even his next film Annavaram is a remake of a Tamil film Thirupachi (which was inspired from Arjun)…so much for creativity! For his next directorial venture, he's somehow roped in A.R Rahman…Let's see where this one goes.

Coming to the next release this week, 36 China Town…I really really wanted to see this…the promos were really slick, this is the first movie where Himesh Reshammiya actually sounds good and the posters were the best I've seen in a long time…but the reviews were very scary, especially the one on rediff…so I decided to save my 80 bucks. But in the cinema near my house, the movie opened to packed houses. So, this leaves me with the other big release this month…Fanaa – got to see how this one fares.

Krrissh is one of the biggest films to release this year. But what I've seen of it until now is disappointing to say the least. Couple of the worst song promos I've seen in recent times has to be from this one. I don't know where this one is heading for…whoever designed Hrithik's hair, costumes and the dance steps!!!

The story looks like a mashup of Spiderman 2 and The Mask. The superhero costume has been borrowed from Matrix while the mask looks like the one worn by WWF/WWE wrestlers Legion of Doom/Road Warriors. Though the stunts are looking good (atleast what is seen in the promo), you never know until you see the final cut…our filmmakers have a very bad record of handling SFX.

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts Rakesh Roshan (atleast in the last 5-6 years) has been following up a hit with a flop, going by that Krrissh might not click. Also, they are crazily dubbing the movie in every possible language!!!

Until this hits the theatres, there a couple of more promising movies like 36 China Town and Fanaa which I hope to catch this month

What is Guru about?

May 3, 2006

There are conflicting reports about the theme of Mani Ratnam's latest Guru. On one hand, it is said to be a period drama set during the 1857 revolt (please….not another Mangal Pandey!!!)…and last heard was that it was based on the life and times of Dhirubhai Ambani.

In fact when the film was initially announced, it was supposed to be a romantic comedy!!! The cast is supposed to have signed a strict confidentiality contract. In any case, it should be interesting to see what this one finally turns out to be.

On the flip side, Mani's former direct Hindi ventures Dil Se and Yuva have been unsuccessful at the box office. When I first saw Yuva, I was quite impressed (though was very pissed at Ajay Devgan's casting)…but later when I caught the Telugu version, the Hindi version appeared to be a complete letdown. I guess the difference in comfort level in making a Tamil film and a Hindi film clearly showed in this case. After Guru, Mani is teaming up with Aamir Khan for his next. Hmm…is he following RGV's footsteps by running away to Bollywood permanently??? waits to be seen

This one is yet another inspiration from his earlier Telugu Filmography Anaganaga Oka Roju…But this one seems to have more action than fun. BTW, the hero looks pathetic.

This probably could be the last remake of Ramu's own films. The only other films which haven't been remade are Kshana Kshanam (though a couple of sequences were used in Daud) and Prema Katha (in this movie the entire cast gets killed the end!!!).

Here is a quick overview of the others…

Shiva (Telugu) remade as Shiva (Hindi) remade as James remade as Shiva – Life comes a full circle :)

Raat remade from Raatri

Drohi remade/dubbed from Antham

Sarkar heavily inspired from Gaayam

The Great Robbery dubbed from Govinda Govinda

Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega inspired from Money

Vaastu Shastra inspired from Deyyam

Go inspired from Anaganaga Oka Roju

Prema Katha -> ??? (Please remake this with Vivek Obey-Rai and Aishwarya Rai….it'll help them increase their record tally of flops)

Kshana Kshanam -> ??? (Please don't tamper with this classic)

Gangster is impressive

April 30, 2006

Mahesh Bhatt and Co have this amazing ability to deliver hits when the industry is in a slump. Though the quality of movies delivered by them is debatable…lot of them are poor lifts from Hollywood….they do hit the bulls eye most of the time.

This time around with Gangster, everything has fallen in place perfectly. All the good things you've been hearing about Gangster are true. A taut screenplay by Mahesh Bhatt and Anurag Basu, competent performances by Shiny, Emraan, Kangana (well…when she screams it's quite irritating….in fact in one of the scenes when Shiny slaps her to make her stop screaming, there was all round applause :) ) and some really good tunes by Pritam…especially Na Jaane Koi and Ya Ali in the second half go very well with the situation.

All in all, this one's a must watch. Going by the Bhatts' previous record, Gangster could very well be the biggest hit of the year so far. One more reason to watch this one is that Emraan Hashmi would be kissing for the last time on screen :(

BTW, there was also a teaser of Bhatt's next "The Killer" starring Emraan Hashmi (of course) and Ifran Khan. This one is a blatant rip-off of the overhyped (atleast that's what I thought) Tom Cruise-Jamie Foxx starrer Collateral.

RGV Factory's latest Darna Zaroori Hai is a letdown given the initial hype which was surrounding it. DZH begins by making fun of its predecessor Darna Mana Hai (this is the best part of the movie directed by Sajid Khan) and goes on to make the same mistakes which plagued DMH.

Among the stories, the most lame and predictable (and very similar in concept) ones are those directed by the more experienced ones – Ramgopal Varma (Amitabh-Reitesh), Prawal Raman (Arjun Ramphal-Bipasha Basu) and Jijy Philip (Anil Kapoor-Mallika Sherawat). The episode featuring Rajpal Yadav (couldn't catch the director's name) is somewhat interesting more because of his wierd characterization than the story itself. Also, the episode directed by Chakravarty featuring Randeep Hooda is somewhat ok. The main story thread is as weak as that of DMH.

As I mentioned earlier, the only bright spot in this enterprise is the episode leading to the title sequence directed by Sajid Khan. He makes an impressive debut as a director. Also, Ramu takes yet another dig at Karan Johar….Anil Kapoor cast as Karan Chopra – the director of Kabhi Kabhi Hota Hai and Thode Shikwe Thode Yaadein and on route to do something different by making a horror film called Chudail :)

All said and done, though DZH disappoints it doesn't really bore you….you can watch it if you don't have anything else to do.

It's after really long time that some watchable films are playing in the theatre near my house. Just look at the films which have been coming out in the past few weeks….Pyare Mohan, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Saawan-The Love Season, Benaras, Shaadi Ke Pehle and many more duds!!!!!

Tomorrow, I'll be watching Gangster (it received really good reviews) and will post my review soon.

The Rahman Effect

April 26, 2006

Check this link to the title sequence of last month's Hollywood Blockbuster "Inside Man" by Spike Lee. "Chaiyya Chaiyya" blends amazingly well as the prelude to a bank robbery.

Talking about Hollywood, Aishwarya Rai's much hyped Chocolat inspiration "Mistress of Spices" has opened to bad reviews (yippeee :) !!!) More about that later
